Registration in the EES after a residence permit expires
On this page, you can read more about what to do if you wish to stay in the Schengen Area after your residence permit has expired. You may be registered in the Entry/Exit System (EES) before your departure.
In certain cases, you have the possibility to remain in the Schengen Area for a short stay (a stay on a visa or visa-free stay) after your residence permit expires.
If you are visa-exempt and have held a residence permit in a Schengen country, you may subsequently stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days on a visa-free stay.
If you are subject to a visa requirement, you must apply for a visa. If you obtain a visa for a short stay before your residence permit expires, you may stay in the Schengen Area on a visa-required stay following the expiry of your residence permit.
If you have not obtained a visa before your residence permit expires, you must leave the Schengen Area when your residence permit expires and then apply for a visa. Read more about short term visas
Registration of a short stay in the EES before departure
It may be an advantage for you to contact the immigration authorities in order to be registered in the EES if you are staying in the Schengen Area on a short stay (visa-free or visa-required) directly following the expiry of your residence permit.
If you contact the authorities, a travel file will be created for you, and an entry date corresponding to the day after your residence permit expires will be registered. In this way, you can avoid extra waiting time at the border when leaving the Schengen Area after the expiry of your short stay, as a travel file is already created.
You must appear in person at the Danish Immigration Service or SIRI to be registered in the EES. You must book an appointment before showing up.
When you appear, your facial image and fingerprints will be taken.

What should you bring?
If you have held a residence permit in another Schengen country than Denmark, or if you have booked an appointment with another authority than the one that issued your residence permit, you must remember to bring documentation of your residence permit and its expiry date. This could, for example, be your residence card.
If you have not been registered in the EES before departure
If you have stayed in the Schengen Area on a short stay after the expiry of your residence permit and are not registered in the EES before the day you leave, you will be registered in the EES at the border when leaving the Schengen Area. You should expect that registration at the external border may take some time. In connection with your departure, a travel file will be created, registering an entry date corresponding to the day after your residence permit expired, as well as your current departure date.
