Proposal to remove the possibility to extend Greencard permits has been presented on 28 April 2022

On 24 February 2020 SIRI announced that the Ministry of Immigration and Integration had drafted a proposal to remove the possibility to extend Greencard permits. This proposal was sent to the relevant authorities and organisations for comments. SIRI also announced that a new announcement would be made when the proposal had been presented to Parliament. This happened on 28 April 2022.

If the proposal is passed, the consequence will be that as of 1 April 2024, it will no longer be possible to extend a residence and work permit under the Greencard scheme. In addition, it will no longer be possible to be granted a residence permit - or to extend a residence permit - as an accompanying family member of a Greencard holder. All applications submitted before 1 April 2024 will be processed according to the current rules.

If the proposal is passed, Greencard holders will have the option of applying for a residence permit under the Labour Market Attachment scheme. In addition, family members will be able to apply as accompanying family members under this scheme.

In order to be granted a residence permit under the Labour Market Attachment scheme, you must have been working for the same employer without interruption for at least the past two years before the date you apply.

Consequently, it is important to be aware of this possibility now, if you hold a residence permit under the Greencard scheme and you wish to continue to live and work in Denmark.
