If you have stayed more than 90 days within the last 180 days in the Faroe Islands, Greenland, or the Schengen Area all together, it will appear in the EES as if you have stayed longer than permitted in the Schengen Area (overstay).

If the recorded overstay is due to your stay in the Faroe Islands or Greenland on the basis of a residence permit, you are however on a legal stay and it will therefore not count as a real overstay.

If you wish to travel to or via a Schengen country, you must be able to document that you are on a legal stay. Therefore, you must remember to bring documentation showing that you do not have the overstay that is otherwise registered.

To be able to document your legal stay, you must therefore bring the following on your trip:

  • a valid passport,

  • a valid residence card or re-entry permit, and

  • a valid short stay visa (if you are visa-required).

Please note that a residence permit for the Faroe Islands/Greenland does not grant you the right to stay in Schengen countries. You must therefore apply for a visa if you are a citizen of a country that requires a visa to enter the Schengen Area. See a list of visa-required countries

If you need general guidance on travel to the Schengen area, you can find information about visas on nyidanmark.dk.

We also recommend that you contact the authority that issued your residence permit if you have further questions.

If you have a residence permit in Greenland

If you have a residence permit in Greenland, you can request to be manually registered in the Entry/Exit System (EES) as having exited while staying in Greenland. This will prevent you from being registered in the EES as having overstayed.

To be registered as having exited, you must:

  • have a travel file in the EES where the most recent registration is an entry into the Schengen area, including Greenland,
  • hold a valid residence permit in Greenland, and
  • be able to document that you have entered Greenland.

As a general rule, the exit registration will be recorded from the first day on which you entered or were present in Greenland with a valid residence permit. Please note that if you subsequently wish to enter and exit the Schengen area, you must request a new exit registration in the EES after entering Greenland.

If you hold a residence permit issued by the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI), you can request SIRI to register your exit in the EES. Send a request to SIRI for exit registration in the EES

If you hold a residence permit issued by the Danish Immigration Service, you can request the Danish Immigration Service to register your exit in the EES. Contact the Danish Immigration Service and request exit registration
