Residence cards for British citizens will soon expire – how to apply for permanent residence
If you are a British citizen and have temporary residence in Denmark under the Withdrawal Agreement between the EU and the UK, it is time to apply for permanent residence.
It has been almost five years since the first residence cards were issued to British citizens residing in Denmark as a result of Brexit. Many of these residence cards are therefore reaching their expiry date.
You can apply for permanent residence if you:
-
have resided legally in Denmark for at least five consecutive years
-
have met the conditions for at least one grounds for residence during this period, e.g. as a worker, self-employed person, student, person with sufficient funds, or family member of a British citizen.
Even if your residence card does not expire for another year, we encourage you to apply now if you meet the conditions. This will ensure that you continue to have proof of your residence in Denmark.

Remember to book an appointment to have your biometric features recorded. After you have decided which of SIRI's branch offices you want to have your biometric features recorded at, choose "Applying under the Danish Aliens Act".
If you already have permanent residence, your residence card is valid for 10 years, and you do not need to do anything at the moment.
