The implementation means that all third-country citizens entries and exits in the Schengen Area, as well as in the Faroe Islands and Greenland, will be registered digitally in connection with short stays (stays on a visa or visa-free stays).
Once the new system is fully operational, it will replace the physical entry and exit stamps in passports. The new system will make it possible to monitor how much time you have left of your short stay – and thereby also whether you are residing legally in the Schengen Area.
The EES will be rolled out gradually from 12 October 2025 to 9 April 2026. This means that your personal data, including facial image and fingerprints, will not necessarily be registered at all external borders of the Member States yet.
There will also be functions that will only become available after the rollout period. For example, at a later stage, you will be able to check how many days you have left of your short stay online or by using the equipment available at border crossing points.
