Entry to the Faroe Islands or Greenland
You are a third-country national who are planning a short-term visit (up to 90 days) to the Faroe Islands or Greenland.
If you are a citizen of a country with a visa requirement
If you plan on making a short-term visit (up to 90 days) to the Faroe Islands or Greenland, you must have a visa that is valid for entry into the Faroe Islands and/or Greenland, if you come from a country with a visa requirement.
You will most likely also need a Schengen visa, since most travel to these two countries goes through a Schengen country, such as Denmark.
Your visa sticker must state that the visa is valid for entry to the Faroe Islands and/or Greenland. A visa to enter Denmark or another Schengen country is not valid for entry into the Faroe Islands or Greenland.
You must therefore apply for a visa for the Faroe Islands and/or Greenland. The application must be submitted to a Danish diplomatic mission or another representation abroad that processes visa applications on behalf of Denmark.
If you are staying in another Schengen country than Denmark
If you have already entered the Schengen area and are staying in a Schengen country other than Denmark on a short stay visa (C visa) or a long stay visa (D visa), you must hold a visa valid for the Faroe Islands and/or Greenland in order to travel there.
You must therefore apply for a visa for the Faroe Islands or Greenland. The application must be submitted to a Danish diplomatic mission or another representation abroad that processes visa applications on behalf of Denmark.
If you are staying in Denmark on a visa that is not valid for entry to the Faroe Islands and Greenland
If you are staying in Denmark on a short stay visa (C visa) or on a long stay visa (D visa) issued by a Schengen country other than Denmark, and you do not hold a visa valid for travel to the Faroe Islands and Greenland, you must apply the Danish Immigration Service for an entry permit for the Faroe Islands and/or Greenland.
Your application must include:
- information about the purpose of your travel
- a flight ticket or other documentation of your planned travel
- an explanation of why you did not apply for a visa for the Faroe Islands or Greenland before entering Denmark.
The application for an entry permit must be submitted via the Danish Immigration Service’s contact form. Select the subject ‘Short stay visa’.
If you hold a Danish D visa but do not yet have a residence card
If you are staying in Denmark on a long stay visa (D visa) issued by Denmark and have not yet received your residence permit (the physical residence card), you must wait until you have received it before you can travel to the Faroe Islands or Greenland.
If you are a citizen of a visa-exempt country and can enter Denmark without a visa, you can also enter the Faroe Islands and Greenland without a visa. You therefore do not need to apply for a visa.

If you hold a diplomatic passport, a service passport, an official passport or a special passport, you may be exempt from the visa requirement, even if you are a national of a visa-required country.
Citizens of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden can enter, reside and work in the Faroe Islands and Greenland without a permit.
If you are staying in Denmark or another EU or Schengen country on a residence permit or with a residence card
If you are staying in Denmark or another EU or Schengen country on a residence permit or on the basis of a residence card issued under EU regulations, you can enter the Faroe Islands and Greenland without a visa.
This applies if:
- your residence permit or residence card has been issued by Denmark
- your residence permit or residence card has been issued by another EU or Schengen country.
In both cases, you must be in possession of a physical residence card.
An ID card issued by an EU or Schengen country that is valid for entry into Denmark does not grant entry to Greenland. You must therefore bring a passport. However, this does not apply to ID cards issued by a Nordic country, which are also valid for entry into Greenland.
In general, if you qualify for a Danish visa, you also qualify for a visa to enter the Faroe Islands or Greenland.

Important exceptions to the general visa and entry rules:
- A Danish/Schengen visa does not grant permission to enter the Faroe Islands or Greenland
- If the visa is only valid for entry to the Faroe Islands or Greenland, a travel medical insurance is not required.
The application procedure for a visa to enter the Faroe Islands or Greenland is the same as for a visa to Denmark. You only need to complete one application form, even if you also apply for a Schengen visa in connection with your travel to the Faroe Islands and Greenland. You must include documentation of your planned stay in the Faroe Islands or Greenland.
