Deadlines if you have applied for family reunification of spouses on 1 July 2018 or after

Normally, you must pass the test in Danish at the A1 level or higher, within 6 months of being registered in the Central Registration System. If you are already a legal resident of Denmark on other grounds, you must pass the test within 6 months of being granted residence permit as a spouse.

Normally, you must pass the test in Danish at the A2 level or higher, within 9 months of being registered in the Central Registration System. If you are already a legal resident of Denmark on other grounds, you must pass the test within 9 months of being granted residence permit as a spouse. 

If you take the tests before the 6 or 9 month deadline, but fail to pass, you will be granted an additional three months to pass. The specific date you need to pass the tests by will be indicated in the letter you will receive from the Immigration Service when you are granted a residence permit.

If you fail to pass the tests by the deadlines, your residence permit can be revoked.

Postponement of deadlines

The deadlines for passing the test can be postponed if you can document, that you are prevented from submitting to the test due to one of the following reasons:

  1. Maternity

  2. Illness of you or your minor child

  3. Extraordinary unsuspected transportation difficulties

If you wish to have your deadline postponed, you must contact the Immigration Service as soon as possible and provide documentation of why you are prevented from submitting to the test.

The deadlines for submission of the test runs until the Immigration Service receive a request for postponing the deadline. The Immigration Service will after you have sent documentation assess whether the deadline may be postponed. Until the Immigration Service has given a new deadline on the ground of postponing you must comply with the first announced deadline.
