If you have stayed more than 90 days within the last 180 days in the Faroe Islands, Greenland, or the Schengen Area all together, it will appear in the EES as if you have stayed longer than permitted in the Schengen Area (overstay).

If the recorded overstay is due to your stay in the Faroe Islands or Greenland on the basis of a residence permit, you are however on a legal stay and it will therefore not count as a real overstay.

If you wish to travel to or via a Schengen country, you must be able to document that you are on a legal stay. Therefore, you must remember to bring documentation showing that you do not have the overstay that is otherwise registered.

To be able to document your legal stay, you must therefore bring the following on your trip:

  • a valid passport,

  • a valid residence card or re-entry permit, and

  • a valid short stay visa (if you are visa-required).

Please note that a residence permit for the Faroe Islands/Greenland does not grant you the right to stay in Schengen countries. You must therefore apply for a visa if you are a citizen of a country that requires a visa to enter the Schengen Area. See a list of visa-required countries

If you need further guidance on traveling to the Schengen Area, we recommend that you contact the authority that issued your residence permit.
