New access to entry to the Faroe Islands and Greenland for third-country nationals

If you are a third-country national and hold a residence permit in Denmark or another Schengen country, you can now travel to the Faroe Islands and Greenland on the basis of your residence permit.

The change has been made following consultation with the Faroese and Greenlandic authorities.

If you have a residence permit in Denmark or another Schengen country

If you are a third-country national and have a residence permit in Denmark or another Schengen country, you can travel to the Faroe Islands and Greenland on the basis of your residence permit.

This means that you:

  • no longer need a visa to travel to the Faroe Islands or Greenland if your residence permit has been issued by a Schengen country other than Denmark.
  • no longer need an entry permit if you travel from Denmark to the Faroe Islands or Greenland.

If you have a residence card issued under EU regulations

If you are a third-country national and have a right to reside in the EU/EEA countries and Switzerland as a family member of a Union citizen who is covered by the EU regulations on free movement under Directive 2004/38/EC, you may also enter the Faroe Islands and Greenland on the basis of your residence card.

If you only have a D visa from another Schengen country

If you are a third-country national only holding a long-stay visa issued by a Schengen country other than Denmark (D visa), you must still obtain a visa in order to enter the Faroe Islands or Greenland.

If you are in Denmark for a short stay on a visa (C visa) and wish to travel onward to the Faroe Islands or Greenland and do not hold a visa valid for the Faroe Islands or Greenland, you must apply for an entry permit. Read more about visa and entry permit for the Faroe Islands and Greenland
