Overview of documents, which permit entry into Denmark without a visa.

I. In general


  • Aufenthaltserlaubnis
    (Residence permit)

  • Niederlassungserlaubnis
    (Residence permit)

  • Aufenthaltserlaubnis – EU für Familienangehörige von Staatsangehörigen eines Mitgliedstaates der Europäischen Union oder eines EWR-Staates, die nicht Staatsangehörige eines Mitgliedstaates der EU oder des EWR sind
    (EU residence permit for family members of citizens of an EU member state or an EEA state if these family members are not citizens of an EU member state or EEA state themselves).

  • Aufenthaltserlaubnis für Staatsangehörige der Schweizerischen Eidgenossenschaft und ihre Familienangehörigen, die nicht Staatsangehörige der Schweizerischen Eidgenossenschaft sind
    (Residence permits for citizens of The Swiss Federation and their family members if these family members are not citizens of The Swiss Federation themselves).

Furthermore, the following permits that are issued before 1 January 2005, provide the possibility of visa-free entry:

  • Aufenthaltserlaubnis für Angehörige eines Mitgliedstaates der EWG
    (Residence permits for EU citizens)

  • Aufenthaltsberechtigung für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland
    (Residence permits in The Federal Republic of Germany)

  • Aufenthaltsbewilligung für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland
    (Residence permits in The Federal Republic of Germany)

  • Aufenthaltsbefugnis für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland
    (Residence permits in The Federal Republic of Germany)

These different residence permits apply only to visa-free entry if they are entered into a passport or issued in connection with a passport instead of a visa; they do not provide the right to entry without visa if they are issued instead of a national identity card.

Residence permits "Aussetzung der Abschiebung (Duldung)" (Postponement of issue (tolerated residence)) as well as "Aufenthaltsgestattung für Asylbewerber" (residence permit for asylum seekers) do not provide the right to visa-free entry either.

  • Fiktionsbescheinigung (Fictitious permits) where the third field on page 3 is crossed off, "der Aufenthaltstitel als fortbestehend (§ 81 Absatz 4 AufenthG)" (the residence permit has continued validity (§81, section 4 in the law regarding residence permit)). Entry is only possible in connection with the expired residence permit or visa.

The first and second ticking off field does not provide explicit right to visa-free entry.


II. Identity card for employees of diplomatic representations

    • Protokollausweis für Diplomaten Art. 38 I WÜD

Identity cards issued to technical and administrative personnel and their family members - Is on the flip side labelled "VB":

      This new type of identity card has been produced since 1.8.2003. Until that time, family members of consulate officials, the administrative personnel, the technical personnel and service personnel received the same type of identity card as the employees themselves unless one of the abovementioned identity cards of type A was issued due to independent commercial business.

IV. Special identity cards

  • Identity cards issued to employees of international organisations and their family members - Is on the flip side labelled "IO":
    • Sonderausweis "IO"

NB: Executives of international organisations and their family members receive an identity card, which is marked “D”; private servants employed by employees of international organisations receive an identity card, which is marked “PP”.

  • Identity cards issued to members of the household pursuant to §27, section 1, no. 5 in the statutory order regarding right to residency - Is on the flip side labelled "S":
    • Sonderausweis "S"
      (special identity card, type S, from 1.1.2005)
