Overview of documents, which permit entry into Denmark without a visa.

Since 1.1.2006, residence permits have been issued in card form, cf. Regulation (EU) no. 1030/2002 regarding uniform design of residence permits to third world country citizens, EFT L 157 dated 15.6.2002, page 1. These cards are also valid as identity cards.

Residence permits are issued as:

"Niederlassungsbewilligung" (Certificate of entitlement to the right of abode)
Residence permit "Familienangehöriger" (family member)
Residence permit "Daueraufenthalt" (longer duration)
Residence permit "Daueraufenthalt - Familienangehöriger" (longer duration – family member)
"Aufenthaltsbewilligung" (Residence permit)

The purpose of the stay must also be informed on the residence permits “Niederlassungsbewilligung" and "Aufenthaltsbewilligung".

"Niederlassungsbewilligung" can only be issued with regard to one of the following purposes:

"Schlüsselkraft" (key employees)
"ausgenommen Erwerbstätigkeit" (non-commercial business)
"unbeschränkt" (unlimited)
"beschränkt" (limited)
"Angehöriger" (individual with other family-related affiliation)

"Aufenthaltsbewilligung" can be issued with regard to one of the following purposes:

"Rotationsarbeitskraft" (Rotation labour force)
"Betriebsentsandter" (Seconded company employees)
"Selbständiger" (Self-employed)
"Künstler" (Artist)
"Sonderfälle unselbständiger Erwerbstätigkeit" (Special non-self-employed business)
"Schüler" (School pupil)
"Studierender" (Student)
"Sozialdienstleistender" (Voluntary community service)
"Forscher" (Researcher)
"Familiengemeinschaft" (Family group)
"Humanitäre Gründe" (Humanitarian reasons)

As documentation for a joint residence permit and certificate of entitlement to the right of abode, a "Lichtbildausweis für EWR- Bürger" (identity card with photo for EEA citizens) is issued upon request to EEA citizens who have settled in Austria.

As documentation for a joint residence permit and certificate of entitlement to the right of abode, a "Daueraufenthaltskarte" (residence permit of longer duration) is issued upon request to third world country family members of EEA citizens for whom free movement applies.

Confirmation of punctual submission of request for extension is issued in the form of a sticker.

From 1 January 1998, residence permits are issued or extended exclusively in this form; currently under “permit type” the following is stated: Niederlassungsbewilligung (residence permit), Aufenthaltserlaubnis (residence permit), Befr. Aufenthaltsrecht (residence permit of limited duration)
Residence permits that are issued before 1 January 1998 within the framework of the validity deadline; some are issued with unlimited duration.
Until 31.12.1992, "Wiedereinreise - Sichtvermerk" (return visa) or "Einreise - Sichtvermerk" (entry visa) was issued by the domestic authorities but also by representations abroad in the form of a stamp “Gewöhnlicher Sichtvermerk” (ordinary visa) issued from 1.1.1993 to 31.12.1997 in the form of a sticker – from 1.9.1996 in accordance with the regulation (EU) 1683/95
"Aufenthaltsbewilligung" (residence permits) issued from 1.1.1993 to 31.12.1997 in the form of a special sticker.
Konventionsreisepaß (convention travel passports) have been issued from 1.1.1993.

The following is not considered as residence permit and thereby does not provide entry into Austria without visa:

Lichtbildausweis für Fremde gemäß § 85 Fremdengesetz 1997
(Identity card for foreign nationals, with photo, cf. § 85 of the Aliens act of 1997)
Durchsetzungsaufschub und Abschiebungsaufschub nach Aufenthaltsverbot oder Ausweisung
(Document regarding postponement of issuing following decision regarding residency prohibition or expulsion)
Bewilligung zur Wiedereinreise trotz bestehenden Aufenthaltsverbotes, in Form eines Visums erteilt, jedoch als eine solche Bewilligung gekennzeichnet
(Permit to return to Austrian territory regardless of existing residency prohibition issued in the form of a visa with statement regarding permission to return)
Vorläufige Aufenthaltsberechtigung gemäß § 19 Asylgesetz 1997, bzw. § 7 AsylG 1991
(Provisional residence permit, cf. § 19 in the asylum law of 1997, § 7 of the asylum law of 1991, respectively)

Befristete Aufenthaltsberechtigung gemäß § 15 Asylgesetz 1997, bzw. § 8 AsylG 1991, als Duldung des Aufenthaltes trotz abgelehntem Asylantrag
(Temporary residence permit, cf. § 15 in the asylum law of 1997, § 8 of the asylum law of 1991 (Duldung), respectively, which provides the right to residency even though rejection has been given on asylum application.
