Residence permit for children born in Denmark by foreign parents

Newly born children who are born in Denmark by foreign parents can be granted a Danish residence permit if at least one of the parents holds a Danish residence permit. If the parents forward a copy of the child's birth certificate to the Immigration Service, the child can be granted a residence permit and be registered by the relevant municipality as being a resident of Denmark.

If the parents are unmarried and only the father holds a Danish residence permit, the parents also need to forward a copy of 'care and responsibility declaration' signed by the father.

There is no processing fee for cases of this type.

Please note that the child may lose his/her residence permit if he/she leaves Denmark. Read more about what happens if you leave Denmark.

If the child loses his/her residence permit and the parents want the child to obtain a new residence permit at a later point, it will be a requirement in the processing of the case that family reunificationthe will not be at odds with the interests of the child. Consequently, it may become harder for the child to obtain a new residence permit if the child has previously held a residence permit which has lapsed.
