Citizenship test

Here you can read the authorized description of the Danish citizenship test. If you apply for Danish nationality, you have to prove your knowledge of the Danish society and of Danish culture and history by presenting a certificate of a special citizenship test.

In addition, you have to satisfy the other conditions for being eligible for Danish nationality, including the condition of being self-supporting.

For further information see 'Conditions to be satisfied'.

At the citizenship test, a total of 40 questions will be asked about the Danish society and Danish culture and history. The questions are composed distinctly for each test. 35 questions will fall within the scope of the study material 'Danmark før og nu – læremateriale om historie, kultur og samfundsforhold til indfødsretsprøven'.

In addition, five questions about current affairs will be asked at the citizenship test.

To pass the test, you must answer 32 of the 40 questions correctly. You have 45 minutes to answer the questions.

When is the test held?

Tests will be held twice a year in June (summer examination) and December (winter examination).

No make-up examinations will be arranged.

In 2010 the citizenship test will be held:

  • 3 June 2010 at 1:00-1:45 pm
  • 2 December 2010 at 1:00-1:45 pm

Who organises the test?

The citizenship test is organised by several language schools across Denmark.

See the list of test organisers here.

How to enrol

You enrol for the citizenship test by appearing personally at the language school at which you intend to take the test.

See the list of test organisers here.

You are recommended to ask the individual test organiser in good time about opening hours and payment options.

Enrolment deadline

The deadline for enrolling for the citizenship test on 3 June 2010 is 29 April 2010.

The deadline for enrolling for the citizenship test on 2 December 2010 is 28 October 2010.

Payment of fee and presentation of proof of identity

A fee of DKK 660 is payable to the test organiser when you enrol for the citizenship test.

To enrol for the citizenship test you must also present a photo proof of identity issued by a Danish public authority, such as a residence card, alien's passport, refugee passport, or passport or photo ID card issued by a public authority of another EU Member State.

Citizenship test participants also have to bring the proof of identity for the actual test.

Preparations for the test

The Ministry of Integration has prepared study material ('Danmark før og nu – læremateriale om historie, kultur og samfundsforhold til indfødsretsprøve'), which you can use to prepare for the test.

The study material can be viewed freely here as preparation for the citizenship test – and you can listen to the text if you download it as an MP3 file:

Supplementary literature for preparation (PDF) in Danish.

A printed version of the study material is also sold by Schultz Distribution.

Examples of questions that you may be asked at the citizenship test are given below.

What will happen when I have passed the citizenship test?

When you have passed the citizenship test, you can apply for Danish nationality if you satisfy the other conditions applicable.

Read more under 'Conditions to be satisfied'.

The nationality application kit can be downloaded from this website. The application form is included in the kit. You have to submit your application at your local police station together with an application fee of DKK 1,000. The police will then forward your application to the Ministry of Integration.

Then the Ministry will examine whether you satisfy the other conditions for acquiring Danish nationality.

If the Ministry finds that you satisfy all other conditions for being eligible for Danish nationality and have passed the citizenship test, the Ministry will list you in the next naturalisation bill.

If you do not satisfy all other conditions, the Ministry will refuse your application for Danish nationality.

If you have previously applied for Danish nationality and that application was refused, for example because you had not stayed in Denmark for a sufficient period of time, or because you were not able to support yourself, the Ministry will examine whether you now satisfy all the conditions for being eligible for Danish nationality. If you still have not stayed long enough in Denmark, or you are still not self-supporting, the Ministry will inform you that you still do not satisfy the relevant condition(s).

If you already have passed the citizenship test

The new Guidelines entered into force on 10 November 2008.

An exception applies to all applicants who passed the citizenship test at the examinations in May 2007, June 2007, December 2007 or June 2008. They will still satisfy the condition of being able to prove their knowledge of Danish society and of Danish culture and history.

To apply under the exception scheme, you must submit your application for Danish nationality to the police before 1 July 2009 in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Guidelines, or you must submit your request for reopening of an application previously refused to the Ministry of Integration before 1 July 2009.
