The Integration Department

The Integration Department has the responsibility for the formulation of the overall integration policies in Denmark – including integration law, legislation regarding teaching Danish as a second language for adult foreigners and the repatriation act.

The Department is also responsible for developing integration policies in connection with initiatives concerning social, labour market and urban political affairs.

The Department is moreover in charge of the Ministry’s finances, statistics and analytical work also placed within the Integration Department.

The Integration Department consists of four offices:


Division of Employment and Training

The primary areas of responsibility for the Division of Employment and Training are the integration of refugees and foreigners into the labour market and the education system.

The Division also works to strengthen and broaden voluntary, local integration efforts and to build up cooperation with private organisations and associations.

The Division is furthermore responsible for the Integration Ministry’s campaign ‘Brug for alle unge’ (We need all young people), which works towards ensuring more young people with another ethnic background than Danish complete an education.


The Finance and Analysis Division

The main tasks of the Finance and Analysis Division are primarily concerned with budget and financial management, coordination of statistics and the preparation of studies in the area of immigration.

The main tasks comprise:

  • Preparation of statistical publications on foreigners
  • Undertaking studies into the development of the integration of foreigners, the number of foreigners and the consequences on society of this development
  • Benchmarking of municipal integration efforts
  • Exchange and communication of experience in the integration field (including the development of the Experience Database of the Ministry of Integration)
  • Coordination of the research initiatives taken by the Ministry concerning refugees and immigrants and their integration

The Division also offers Secretariat assistance to the Think Tank of the Minister for Integration.

Integration Policy Division

The Integration policy Division has responsibility for:

  • The formulation of overall integration policy
  • The coordination of integration policies with other ministries, local authorities and refugee and immigration organisations
  • Relations to the Danish Refugee Council (Dansk Flygtningehjælp) and the Council for Ethnic Minorities (Rådet for Etniske Minoriteter)
  • General planning of initiatives against racism and xenophobia
  • Issues concerning increased efforts to help socially vulnerable refugees and immigrants
  • International cooperation on integration and the combat of racism
  • Administration of subsidy schemes in the integration field

The Section for Danish Courses is in charge of the development and operation of Danish courses for adult foreigners as well as legislation in this field.

The Section is responsible for:

  • The development of education methods
  • The administration of tests
  • Matters concerning language centres
  • Basic and further training of language centre management and teachers

The Unit for Urban and Housing Affairs

The Unit for Urban and Housing Affairs focuses on deprived neighborhoods, and in particular on measures to prevent marginalization and social exclusion of refugees and immigrants residing in these areas.
