Who processes which cases?
When you apply for permission to enter or reside in Denmark, you may come into contact with several different authorities. This will depend on the type of application and on how far in the process the application is.
Below is an overview of the main areas and the responsible authority. You can see where to submit an application, and where to apply your case, if your application is rejected.
Visa
The application should be submitted at a Danish diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate general) in your country of origin (or the country where you have resided legally for the past three months). The application will be processed either by the mission or by the Immigration Service in Denmark. If your application is rejected, you can appeal to the Ministry of Integration.
Residence and work permit
The application should be submitted to the Immigration Service. If your application is rejected, you can appeal to the Ministry of Integration.
Residence permit as a student, au pair or intern
The application should be submitted to the Immigration Service. If your application is rejected, you can appeal to the Ministry of Integration.
Certificate of registration for EU/EEA citizens and Swiss citizens
The application should be submitted to the Regional State Administration. If your application is rejected, you can appeal to the Immigration Service. However, please notice the next section on citizens of the new EU countries.
Work permit for citizens of the new EU countries
Employees from the new EU countries whose job in Denmark is not covered by a collective bargaining agreement, must hold a work permit. The application for a work permit and certificate of registration should be submitted to the Immigration Service. If your application is rejected, you can appeal to the Ministry of Integration.
Asylum
The application should be submitted to the Immigration Service. If your application is rejected, you can appeal to the Ministry of Integration.
Residence permit on humanitarian grounds
The application should be submitted to the Ministry of Integration. If your application is rejected, you cannot appeal.
Danish citizenship
The application should be submitted to the police. The Ministry of Integration will assess whether you meet the conditions. If you do, you will be granted Danish citizenship by the Danish Parliament. If you do not meet the conditions, you will be informed that you cannot be granted Danish citizenship at the present time.
Deportation of asylum seekers
Deportation of asylum seekers who have been given a final rejection is the responsibility of the police.
Integration
Integration work is carried out by the Ministry of Integration and the Danish municipalities.
