Visa extensions for visa holders prevented from leaving Denmark due to the ash cloud from Iceland’s volcanic eruption

If you are stranded in Denmark due to the flight ban instituted as a result of the cloud of volcanic ash and your visa is close to expiring, we recommend that you apply for an extension.

Since the eruption is an act of God, you will not be held responsible if the flight ban forces you to remain in Denmark after your visa expires.

As it is unknown when air travel will resume, we recommend that you apply for an official extension of your visa.

If you are currently in the Greater Copenhagen area, you can apply for an extension at the Immigration Service, Ryesgade 53, 2100 Copenhagen Ø.If you are outside Greater Copenhagen, you should apply at the nearest police station. You are requested to submit an application to extend a Schengen visa (pdf)

You will be permitted to remain in Denmark while your application is being reviewed. We expect to be able to grant extensions of 14 days. Given the unexpected nature of the situation, all applications for extension will be processed free of charge.

When completing your application, please indicate whether you expect to leave the Schengen Area from Denmark. If you will be departing the Schengen Area from another country, you can also be issued a transit visa.
