Foreign students: Apply now!

The Danish Immigration Service encourages all foreign students who wish to study in Denmark to apply for a residence permit as soon as they receive their letter of acceptance from the university.

The Danish Immigration Service is doing its best to process applications for residence permits from foreign students as quickly as possible so they can make it to Denmark in time for the beginning of the semester on 1 September 2009. To make this possible students need to submit their applications as soon as they receive their letter of acceptance from the university. Otherwise, it will be impossible for the Immigration Service to issue the residence permits in time for the students to make it to Denmark by 1 September.

One particular challenge is foreign students who are accepted for a Bachelor’s degree at a university, who will normally receive their letter of acceptance no sooner the end of July. This gives the Immigration Service less than a month to process the application which is not enough under normal circumstances.

Deputy Head of Division for the Danish Immigration Service's Study and Research Division, Kirsten Meier says:

- Normally, we process this type of application within 60 days, but we have a special case processing guarantee for students accepted at universities: If they apply for a residence permit before 10 August and have included all relevant documentation, we guarantee that those eligible for a residence permit will have it before the beginning of the semester.

In order to facilitate the application procedure we encourage foreign students to consult the website of the Danish embassy or consulate, where they have to submit their application. Here they will find contact details and other relevant information e.g. on fees they may have to pay. The websites of Danish embassies and consulates can be found at the website of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs http://www.um.dk/en.

Last year the Danish Immigration Service issued a residence permit to 5.598 foreign university students.
