Municipal services for residents

There are 98 autonomous municipalities in Denmark. Municipalities levy taxes and determine which services they will provide for residents. Residents vote in local elections for politicians who will make decisions about municipal resources.

Municipalities are responsible for most civil services – except for hospitals which are the responsibility of the five regions.

The most import municipal responsibilities include schools, daycare centres and care for the elderly. Additionally, municipalities are responsible for job centres and Danish language courses for foreigners. Municipalities are also responsible for the rehabilitation of residents who have been admitted to hospitals, as well as for the upkeep of roads and parks.

Citizen service centres

Most municipalities have one or more citizen service centres ('Borgerservice') that answer residents' questions about the public sector. As the local gateway to the entire public sector, citizen service centres provide advice on matters such as how to find a job, how you pay taxes, how to find a place to live or how to get your child a passport. If the issue cannot be dealt with directly by the centre, you will be referred to the relevant organisation or authority.

International Citizen Service

Denmark has four International Citizen Service centres which aim to help foreign nationals in Denmark with information, paperwork etc. Read more about International Citizen Service.
