Owner-occupied housing ('Ejerbolig')
There are many things to be aware of when purchasing a home, and it can be difficult to get an overview of the relevant precautions you will need to take. Purchasing a home is recommended for those who plan to reside in Denmark for a long period of time. Geographical location has a big impact on the supply, price and standard of owner-occupied housing.
Prices
Generally the cost of living in Denmark is high with regard to housing, but the price also depends greatly on where you are geographically situated. In general, accommodation is more expensive in urban areas than in the countryside, and some neighbourhoods in cities tend to be more expensive than others.
Rules regarding home ownership in Denmark
If you are an EU citizen, no special rules apply with regards to buying property in Denmark.
However, if you do not reside in Denmark or have not previously lived in the country for a minimum of five years you will need permission from the Ministry of Justice to purchase an owner-occupied home. Read more about the rules for bying property in Denmark in the Ministry of Integration's publication 'Citizen in Denmark'.
It is important to ensure your home and valuables. However, this is not a requirement. Read more about insurance.
