Credit and debit cards available in Denmark

Below, you can read about Dankort, the national debit card, International debit cards and International credit cards

Dankort – the national debit card

When you open a bank account, you can ask to be issued a 'Dankort'. A Dankort is a debit card widely used in Denmark. Because of the Dankort's popularity, cheques are very rarely used. It is up to the specific bank to decide whether they will issue a Dankort to a customer and the bank's assessment will usually depend on how credit-worthy they find you to be, but these criteria can vary from bank to bank. The debit card is usually accessible in a bundle of services that the bank offers customers together with the bank account.

International debit cards

Even though the national debit card is widely used, more and more stores are also accepting international debit cards like VISA Electron, Maestro etc. With the increasing number of merchants accepting these cards, they are appearing more often in packages offered by banks.

International credit cards

International credit cards such as MasterCard, Diners Club International and Eurocard have been offered by banks for a number of years.
